The holiday season is a time for relaxation, fun, and family bonding—but it can also be a little hectic if you’re away from home. Christmas brings its own unique set of preparations. If you’re planning to spend Christmas with us, here are a few tips to help you enjoy your holiday and be Christmas-ready, even while you’re away.

Christmas Lunch.

Christmas meals are a cherished tradition, and you can keep this alive, even while away on holidays. If you are preparing Christmas lunch here at our apartments its a good idea to check what room type you are in. Our apartments are fully self contained with a full kitchen equipped with cooking utensils. Our studios have less in the way of Kitchens with only a stove top and small fridge.

If a BBQ lunch is more your style we have 2 BBQ areas for guests to use, if you are in a townhouse you have your own BBQ on your balcony, or if you prefer a carefree picnic at any one of the idyllic locations close to our apartments. We have picnic baskets available at reception with all the picnic utensils you will need. You just need to fill it with amazing food and drinks. The Platter Effect can help you with an amazing spread for your picnic and we can point you in the right direction for the perfect spot.

If its a fresh Coffs Harbour seafood lunch you will be enjoying on Christmas day. The Fishing Co Op is the best place to get your freshest seafood. Get your orders in and get there early to avoid disappointment.

Fill the Fridge with holiday goodies before you arrive.

Keep in mind most shops are closed on Christmas day, There is nothing worse than arriving to your destination after a long drive or flight and have to tackle the shops for groceries. If you would like to arrive with your fridge already filled with all your favorites, Simply do an online Coles or Woolworths order and have it delivered to reception on the day of arrival. Please choose between 2pm - 5pm for drop off and we can have your food put in your fridge for you in your apartment. Please contact our reception before placing order.

Decorations.

Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you can’t get festive. We love Christmas here and put a small Christmas tree in each apartment to make it feel a bit more festive while your away. If you would like to bring some tinsel or a strand of lights to give it a more personnel touch you are more than welcome too, just because you are away from home doesn't mean you cant get festive.

If you have presents that need storing away from prying eyes, we have a guest locker where you can store bulky gifts. Please arrange with reception for pick up on Christmas Eve.

This captivating new building in Coffs Harbour serves as a beacon for travellers and art enthusiasts seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of the region’s history.

Yarrila, is a Gumbaynggirr word meaning to brighten or illuminate. With its green façade the new centre is a hub of cultural events, art exhibitions, storytelling sessions that allow guests to dive deeper into the living traditions of the Gumbaynggirr people.

YAM has five contemporary exhibition spaces. ‘Yaamanga Around here’ – is a permanent exhibition that explores the history and identity of Coffs Harbour through themes of place, community and belonging.

The paved walkway with a fairly steep incline will take you up to a grassed area overlooking McCauley's Beach to the south and Diggers beach to the north, with amazing views of Muttonbird Island and the Solitary Islands as your backdrop. all you need to do is find a nice shady spot under one of the trees that scatter the headland and lay out your picnic rug and Relax. There are toilets locates in the carpark at McCauley's and Diggers Beach, There are no picnic tables or BBQs so you will need to take a rug and your picnic basket full of goodies. There are a couple of spots on your way up the hill with seats to sit and rest on your way up. This is an ideal spot for a couple just wanting a nice relaxing picnic.

Moonee Beach Reserve

Moonee Beach, where the creek meets the beach, Located only 10kms from our apartments is the picturesque Moonee Beach Reserve equipped with picnic tables, free electric BBQs, toilets, shower facilities, kids playground and plenty of parking.

Moonee has something to offer everyone from the keen surfer to the families with young kids. The protected creek offers a safe haven for swimming for the littlies or venture further for the beautiful deep water holes with rope swings. Great place for kayaking or just relaxing under the shade of the Norfolk Island Pines. This location has great facilities and is very family friendly, perfect for large gatherings, even take the dog this is an on leash pet-friendly area.

Look at me Now Headland

Look at me Now headland is where you can get up close and personnel with the wildlife. Sit with kangaroos while watching the whales swim past, and for the keen bird watcher don't forget your binoculars. There is plenty of parking and the track is an easy paved walkway where you will easily find a nice flat grassy area to lay a picnic rug. There are no facilities here so take plenty of water and all your essentials for a scrumptious picnic, and please don't share your picnic with the wildlife.

Boambee Bay Reserve

Boambee Bay is known for its beautiful turquoise water coming in from the ocean while being protected from rougher seas making it the perfect place for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. There are shelters for hire for larger groups and plenty of picnic tables around the reserve. Electric BBQs are available or if you prefer there is café for food and drinks. Parking is $5 per car to enter. Playground for the kids and on leash pet friendly.

If you would would like somewhere a bit more private and quiet just head up the hill from the reserve to Sawtell Headland Lookout. Take your picnic basket, and your rug and relax while you take in the amazing view of Boambee Beach.

Swans Picnic area

If it's rainforest you are after and want to escape the summer heat then Swans Picnic Area just below Sealy Lookout is a must, just off the road, but you would think you were deep within the rainforest with the huge trees surrounding you and a picnic table just by the freshwater creek. There is only a picnic table here so you will need to take everything with you, very easily accessible from where you park your car. This one is a hidden gem, definitely worth a visit.

The Outback Air Race is almost in Coffs!

The 11 ^th Outback Air Race has taken to the sky on the 29 ^th August and is running until 11 ^th September, with the race concluding in Coffs Harbour.

The Lottery Office Outback Air Race is a flight time trial through the Australian Outback and raises much needed funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.

This amazing fundraising event has been running since 1996 and both competitors and spectators have raised over $3.1 million! These funds go towards outfitting RFDS aircraft with the essential medical equipment, to treat sick and injured patients across Australia.

The October long weekend is one that elicits excitement in a lot of us. The impending summer, the change to daylight savings and the general buzz of the upcoming Christmas holidays.

Friday evening

Arrive and check in at The Observatory. Settle in, unpack and then head to Tahruah Thai & Vietnamese Restaurant around the corner for some well-deserved dinner.

Saturday

10 Fun Facts About Solitary Islands Marine Park!

For those who love diving and water activities, we thought you might like to know some fun facts about the Solitary Islands Marine Park, located right here in Coffs Harbour!

The Marine Park extends along about 75km of coastline from Coffs Harbour through to Sandon River on the NSW North Coast.
It’s been a Marine Reserve since 1992.
The local Aboriginal communities within the Gumbaynggirr Nation and Yaegl Nation have strong cultural links with the Marine Park and are actively involved in planning its conservation.
Captain Cook named the Solitary Islands in 1770, during his voyage along Australia’s East Coast.
There are 18 recorded wrecks that lie within or near the Marine Park.
The Marine Park assists in conserving species that are threatened, protected or endemic including the Grey Nurse shark. ‘Manta Arch’ at South Solitary Island is a popular site with Dive tours for viewing Grey Nurse Sharks.
There are over 530 species of reef fish in the park.
There are more than 120 coastal and marine bird species around the area.
Buster, located at Woolgoolga Beach, is the only wreck within the park that is visible from an accessible location.
The park is made up of zones, to conserve marine biodiversity whilst also providing a range of uses such as swimming, surfing, scuba diving, boating and more.

Miss this and you’re missing out on an iconic piece of Coffs. This trek starts at the marina and ends on top of the outfacing cliffside of Muttonbird Island, surrounded by ocean. You may even catch glimpse of a whale!

Coramba Village Market

After a market just outside of Coffs? Enjoy a day trip out to the hinterland and stop by the Coramba Village Markets!

Coramba is a quaint village 20 minutes outside of Coffs and their market has a fun village vibe to it. There’s plenty to see and do, with activities, market stalls, live music and lots more.

However, Coffs Harbour is one of the best places to visit during Winter! With milder temperatures and a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities, you’ll completely forget about the weather!

One of the most popular winter activities in Coffs is whale watching, which happens June to November each year. Coffs provides various vantage points to admire these beautiful creatures, including Muttonbird Island’s eastern side lookout as well as many tour operators providing whale watching cruises, where you can get up close and personal!

Another great outdoor (but kind of indoor!) activity is visiting the Butterfly House. You’ll be immersed in an indoor subtropical rainforest setting where you’ll see hundreds of stunning butterflies. You’ll be nice and warm, walking through the gorgeous setting and get to learn more about the different species.

As of the 1 ^st March 2022, all NSW residents over the age of 18 years will receive 1 x $50 Stay NSW voucher from the government. These vouchers can be redeemed at participating accommodation providers across NSW. Just like the Dine & Discover vouchers!

The Observatory Apartments is registered to accept these vouchers, so we thought it would be helpful to outline how you can use them with us.

1. You will need to book direct via our website HERE or by calling 02 6650 0462.

2. The vouchers are treated as cash and are redeemed on check in, NOT at the time of booking. You will not see the voucher discounted when booking on the website or when you receive your confirmation email. It will be discounted from the purchase price upon check in, when making payment.

3. The voucher must be valid at the time of check in. Valid for bookings made prior to 9 ^th October 2022.

4. You may use more than one Stay Voucher per stay for example if you are staying with friends or family you can combine your vouchers to make the most of your holiday.

1. Our 10/10 cleanliness rating has always been a point of pride and constant improvement at The Observatory. And now, it’s essential! We’ve upped our game and you can be assured that your room will be cleaned to the highest possible standard.

2. We keep up to date on the most recent changes to government guidelines, so you don’t have to. We will keep you informed all the way if things change leading up to, during or after your stay that might concern you.

3. We’ve instilled a COVID-19 cancellation policy which entitles you to free-of-charge cancellations if a suburb you have visited becomes deemed as a hotspot prior to your booked stay with us! All for your peace of mind.

4. We will contact you on the day of your arrival to ensure we have all information required for your stay allowing us to facilitate contactless check-In procedures. We will still be onsite to assist you with any needs you might have throughout your stay though.

5. Our apartments are self-contained. Meaning that should you wish to avoid the busy food venues and outlets, then your very own kitchen and dining area is fully equipped for what you need!

Best Places to Run in Coffs Harbour

Looking to lace up your trainers and enjoy a daytime run during your stay in Coffs Harbour? Here’s our 5 favourite running spots!

1 – Parkrun at Coffs Creek – Runners unite at Parkrun, a non-for-profit organisation where over a hundred participants come together weekly on a Saturday morning to run from Park Beach Reserve to the start of the North Wall and back, twice! It’s a full 5km when you’re finished!

2 – To the South Wall – Start at the tip of the Jetty and make your way south along the foreshores and past the Deep-Sea Fishing Club until you reach the tip of the South Wall with its coloured stones amidst the ocean! 2.6km, each way.

3 – Boambee Beach - Fancy yourself a beach run? Bonus points if you run barefoot! Soak in the sun and enjoy the serene sounds of rolling waves. From one end to another it is an estimated 5.6km, so don’t feel down if you fall short.

4 – Across the Coastline – Coffs is blessed with back-to-back beaches and footpaths climbing the headlands between them. You could run with the ocean by your side all the way from the tip of Boambee Beach out to Emerald if you had the stamina for it! So, mosey on down to the Jetty, hit the sand and run North as far as you please!

5 – Muttonbird Island – Now this is the run you didn’t know you needed! The climb up Muttonbird will have you out of breath, but the rest is flat and it’s all worth it for the view on the other side! Start at the tip of the Jetty and work your way along the North Wall until you reach the other side of Muttonbird. It’s breathtaking, rewarding and 2.2km each way.

Have some free daylight hours to spare on the Coffs Coast? Here’s 7 fun fishing spots close to our apartments!

1. Offshore – Both Coffs Harbor Deep Sea Fishing and KC’s Fishing Charter can cater a fun, thrilling day of offshore fishing with all equipment included! Check them out and set out across the blue water

2. Boambee or Park Beach – Join the ranks of those casting away by the sandbanks and chasing all manner of fish, from mulloway to bream and whiting! Those deep sections of water right by the shore where water breaks over sandbanks is where you want to be.

3. Coffs Creek – Wade the shallows along the beautiful creek in a dedicated spot down by the Promenade! You’ll chase flathead, bream and whiting as you cast away in these smaller waterways to the sounds of local birds chirping away!

4. Bellinger River – for the true sports fishing experience, you’ll likely want to chase some bass and will find the freshwater stretches of the Bellinger River very rewarding. It’s about 30 minutes’ drive from the Jetty Precinct (the farthest on our list), but well worth the journey.

5. The Jetty – that’s right! The iconic Jetty is yours to cast off from either the top or even the smaller, lower deck! It’s great for finding bream, trevally and whiting with the odd kingfish and mulloway caught too!

6. The Marina – There’s a plethora of places to cast off at the Marina. A particular favourite of ours is behind the Fishing Co-Op, as it’s perfect for families and with easy car-park access. Super for bream, whiting, flathead, trevally and tailor!

7. South Wall – the ocean side of the South Wall is renowned for the frequent catching of mackerel, tuna, mulloway, kingfish, snapper and more! However, pick a safe day and keep your wits about you.

Planning to visit Coffs Harbour, then you’ve seen the photos, right? Which photos? Well, the ones of countless passers-by holding up the Big Banana, of course! But did you know that’s not the only fabulous photo op on the Coffs Coast? We’re here to share some more locations where you’re guaranteed to get a long-lasting photo on your trip!

Let’s run down the list, shall we?

1. The Big Banana – let’s get this one done and dusted. You stand in front of The Big Banana; you pretend to hold it up and… Snap! You’ve got your first fab photograph.

2. Muttonbird Island – it’s essential that you climb up Muttonbird Island at least once during your stay. It’s only a 15-min walk from our self-contained apartments, after all! Once at the top, you have 360-degrees of beautiful backgrounds to work with. Happy snapping!

3. South Break Wall – from countless viewpoints you can see those colourful blocks at the tip of the South Break Wall out in the distance. Do yourself a favour, trek the wall and feel like you’re standing amid the ocean! Your photos won’t do the views justice, but that’s not to say they won’t be awesome!

4. North Break Wall – on the way to or from Muttonbird, you’ll find yourself cruising along the North Break Wall. When you hit that gorgeous golden hour post sunrise or before sunset, it’s quite the sight! Sip a coffee, soak in that sunlight, and snap away!

5. Sealy Lookout – it’s the ultimate view overlooking all of Coffs Harbour, well worth the short drive across town. There’s a sky-pier from which you can walk atop the trees and take an awe-filled photo.

6. Beaches (duh) – there’s many a beautiful beach, so take your pick! Jetty, Park Beach and Boambee are closest, and will serve as super backgrounds to any photo. This will make your friends jealous!

7. The Botanic Garden – it’s filled with glorious views, each with their own unique look (thanks to the flora within)! Japanese Pagoda-style? Check! Vibrant flowerbed-style? Also check! Creek and boardwalk-style? Well speaking of creeks…

8. Coffs Creek – not only is it a beautiful place for a walk, and super close to our apartments. But you’ll find serene views of a sparkling creek filled with fish and birdlife, not to mention a few sculptures sparsely spread along the path.

9. Headlands – From Macauley’s to Look At Me Now, there’s many a magic headland to enjoy. Why not visit them all?!

10. The Jetty – it’s iconic, historic and a little bit magic. Walking the Jetty itself at any time of day is beautiful, but it’s especially stunning during a sunrise or sunset. The perfect way to start or end a day and just a 10-minute walk from our apartments.

1. Brelsford Park – with a bustling skatepark on one end and a serene and tree-smattered part on the other, this park is a few minutes’ drive away from our apartments and is complete with an impressive kids’ playground! Also, Coles is just across the road for any last-minute snacking essentials.

2. Park Beach Reserve – a frequent hotspot for summertime night markets, Park Beach Reserve offers you tonnes of grassland space or undercover tables, a kids’ playground and immediate access to the gorgeous Coffs Creek and coastal walkway. What more can you ask for?

3. Jetty Foreshores – behind the beach lies the Jetty Foreshores, a long stretch of beautifully kept walkway with grasslands galore. Undercover tables, as well as public amenities and barbecues are there for that extra awesomeness!

4. The Botanic Gardens – perhaps the perfect place for a picnic. It’s got countless places where you can lay your blanket and soak in the views. Want to sit beside a beautiful waterfall? Check. What about overlooking a duck-filled pond, complete with a gorgeous red bridge and pagoda? You bet! You must check it out.

In the midst of summer our Coffs Coast begs you to splash about our cool fresh and salt waters! Here’s a variety of ways you can do so solo, with friends or family, as well as a list of things you’ll kick yourself if you forget to pack!

Before you embark on our list of activities, it’s essential to know what to bring! We all know that last-minute scramble, so here’s your tailor-made cure!

Sunscreen (at least SPF 30).
Waterside footwear (thongs or sandals always gets a workout).
Sun-safe Hat & breathable long-sleeve shirt (vital protection for long periods of exposure or for walking from point A to B).
Togs, goggles, kids’ floaties and the other essentials you already own (avoid wasting your money and panic-purchasing replacements).
Backpacks, day bags, a beach bag and beach towels (often forgotten, always useful).
Sunnies (headaches, no more!).

Sawtell Beach (15-minute drive)

Woolgoolga Beach (25-minute drive)

Diggers Beach is a 900m long, open beach just north of the Jetty Precinct, (sharp east of the Big Banana.) Keep an eye out for the flags along the long stretch of open beach between the big beautiful headlands at either end. Diggers is patrolled by both Lifesavers and Lifeguards 7 days per week.

Eye spy something starting with WHALE!

August marks the halfway point of this year’s Humpback whale migration for 2020, and we have put together a helpful guide to make the most out of a day out spend whale watching with the kids. While getting out and about with your ankle biters can be a fun way to spend a day of the school holidays, there are sure to plenty of questions while waiting to (hopefully) spot a whale! We’ve put together some tips to make sure you have the best opportunity of sighting one of these magical animals in the wild directly from the coastline of Muttonbird Island.

With binoculars look to the viewing platform on top of Muttonbird Island. There may be people up there who have spotted whales and will be pointing out to sea.
Listen for the Whale Bell at The Observatory. When whales are sighted, we will ring!
Watch the whale watching boats leaving harbour, they will go straight to where the whales are clustered.

Each year whales migrate along the NSW coastline heading north to the warm coastal waters of the Coral Sea to mate and give birth from late April to August returning southward from September to November.
Book a room at The Observatory with an ocean facing view, you’ll be able to watch out for Humpbacks while you enjoy a morning or afternoon coffee from the comfort of your own private balcony!
The most common and easiest to spot is the Humpback.
From a series of blows, migrating whales can then submerge anything from a few minutes to 15 minutes.
Experienced whale watchers note the arch on a whales back, if they have only a small arch on their back on their last dive they are not diving deep and will surface again shortly. If they have a significant arch they are about to dive deep and wont surface for some time.

So, you (finally) spotted one…Yahoo! Now what to do?

If you spot whales breaching (putting on a good display and not just travelling through) please call reception on 9 and they will ring the Whale Bell alerting other guests to be on the lookout.

Not only will you have a story to talk all over the town about but you can log your sighting on the Wild About Whales app ! Logging your sighting into the app will be a buzz for the kids knowing their sighting is helping others see these magical creatures for themselves and helping researchers track the migration of this incredible species.
